The ROG series has a unique trend that easily identifies their laptops – they usually have a nice red logo sporting their brand name, complete with accents placed on the case. With the GL502, this trend continues, but the red appears to be brighter and is highlighted in a pretty orange color.
The WASD keys have received the same form of treatment and some users may not agree with the color because it appears to be too “cartoony,” but that is all a matter of preference.
Apart from the visual change, the quality and rigidity of the chassis are well above average and everything you would expect from ASUS. The hinges are evenly spaced and there’s no sign of weakness around the base and the brushed aluminum outer lid doesn’t creak when pushed down, like many laptops.
Beyond looks, the large plastic exterior helps keep the weight down to 4.9 pounds. As of right now, it is the thinnest gaming laptop in the world, measuring in at 15.35 x10.47 x 1.2 inches.
The display we have in this ASUS ROG STRIX GL502 laptop is a 15.6-inch one with a crisp 1080p resolution, offering almost no graininess, even when you are sitting up close to it and looking at a bright white image.
The brightness and contrast ratio are nesting a little under 300 nits and 900:1. There’s a small amount of uneven backlight bleeding on the bottom and top left corners, but it isn’t big enough to notice it during gaming, or even while working.
The processor that is responsible for powering this gaming laptop is a 6th Gen Intel Core i7-6700HQ that clocks with quad cores and eight threads of up to 3.5GHz, delivering desktop-like performance. The 16GB of DDR4 memory offers ample room for heavy multitasking and large datasets. There is also a 128HB SSD that speeds up the load times and improves the overall system responsiveness.
This ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS74 gaming laptop has the power of a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB VRAM in it and it even has the bonus of being VR-capable. When running the StreamVR performance benchmark to check for VR-readiness, it reached 10.6. On standard benchmarks, this laptop held its own. It nailed down a nice 77 fps on the Rise of the Tomb Raider (at 1080p on Very High).
What about storage and battery?
As for the storage, ASUS has done a good job. It has a total of two storage bays available through a single slot and a 2.5 inch SATA III bay. The 2.5-inch bay is capable of accepting both drives that are 7 mm and 9.5 mm’s thick. The sequential read rates are what you would expect them to be, with an average of 516 MB/s. However, when it comes to the sequential write rates, they are a bit slow, at 174 MB/s.
The hard drive comes with Windows 10 pre-installed in it, which is a major bonus. Windows 10 is the latest operating system offered by Microsoft and is great for gaming due to the support offered.
The battery life is about what you would expect it to be at when it comes to gaming laptops. Running off a battery, the laptop lasts 2 hours and 39 minutes. If you plan on doing some hard-core gaming, then you should keep the laptop plugged into the wall.
There are numerous connectivity options in this laptop – it supports wireless standards such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There are also 3 USB ports (1x USB 3.0 and 2 x USB 3.1 Type C) and 1 x headphone-out and Audio-in combo jack. It even has a card reader, LAN jack, and 1 HDMI.

This Strix-branded laptop is a full HD gaming beast, complete with booming speakers and an amazing screen. If you’re a hard-core gamer and you’re looking for a good gaming laptop this would definitely be a good option.
