Design

The ASUS ROG series is well known for its design elements. This one, without a doubt, falls into the same category. It comes in a nice shade of black. Usually, it is red that people love in gaming laptops but here we have an orange and a black scheme that runs all along the laptop. The metallic finish adds to the already premium look.

The Aura RGB keyboard is one of the best features in this laptop. It has 4 customizable lighting that allows you to personalize your keyboard according to your needs. The travel in the keys is not big by any means. It is around 2.5mm which is decent but much better than any other gaming laptops out there.

ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE gaming laptopThough the laptop might look a swimsuit model from the outside, it is pretty heavy. It weighs around 5.5 pounds which is actually not that bad when considering other gaming laptops (we are looking at you, Alienware).

Another thing that needs a mention in the design is the cooling system. It is only a minor improvement over the previous version but is worth the mention. You can now adjust the fan speeds which means you can also control the noise coming out. We all want ideal cooling so leaving it as it is will be a good idea.

ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE Specs

The screen we have here is a 15.6-inch Full HD wideview display. It is much like the IPS display and comes with an impressive viewing angle of 178 degrees. This viewing angle allows you to watch the screen from pretty much any angle. That’s great because you won’t lose any colors when watching your favorite movies and TV shows.

The ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE laptop is run by an Intel Core i7 7700HQ chip. This quad-core chip from Intel succeeds the famous i7 6700HQ processor from the 6th generation of Intel processors. It clocks at around 2.8GHz typically and can go up to 3.5GHz when the need arises.

How does the average gamer benefit?  Well, your laptop will run pretty much anything without any issues. This i7 7700HQ chip scores around 8900 in CPUMark which tells us something about its sheer power. This processor can handle even the heaviest of usages, so be sure to not hold back when you need to get work done.

There is a 256GB SSD for storage purposes. There is also a 1TB mechanical drive which can hold things up for a long time. Speed is one of the good features in this laptop and that’s mainly due to the solid state drive in place. Opening and closing apps, copying and moving big files, and other small things will all be very fast.

As far as the memory is concerned, there are 16 gigs of DDR4 type RAM clocking at 2400MHz. It is fast and way better than the DDR3 memories we are so used to. Multitasking will be a breeze and you will not face any lag when taking the laptop for a toll.

Graphics and other stuff

The GPU in the ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE gaming laptop is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti. This graphics card comes with a dedicated memory of 4 gigs which is pretty neat. This GPU is not as good as the 1070 and 1080 but still is good enough to be called as a reliable mid-ranger.

You will still be able to run your favorite games with high settings. Below is a list that shows the frame rates of recent games with high setting.

  • Overwatch – 117 FPS
  • Doom – 69 FPS
  • Call of Duty Infinite Warfare – 61 FPS
  • Titanfall 2 – 62 FPS
  • For honor – 68 FPS
  • Civilization VI – 58 FPS
  • Watch dogs 2 – 46 FPS
  • FIFA 17 – 197 FPS

Some of the above games are pretty demanding. If you think these frame rates are impressive, then this GPU should work for you just fine.

Connectivity options galore in the ASUS ROG Strix GL553VE laptop. It comes with USB 3.1 ports, USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, single HDMI port, an ethernet port, a headphone jack, and also an optical drive. You get a mix of both the recent and older ports which is pretty cool.

Let’s talk about the battery life. It is average, to be honest. Expecting around 4 to 4.5 hours would be reasonable on light usage. If you are going to game, then be sure to plug in.
