The design is pretty much like any premium gaming laptop – it has an aluminum body with a carbon fiber palm rest. Looking at the build, you will see that it is fairly solid and well put together.
The keyboard on this laptop is decent – it’s pretty much what you would expect when it comes to a laptop of this size. The feedback on the keys is good, measuring at around 60 grams or so to depress a key. The spacing may cause you to make more typos than normal at first, but in due time, you’ll get used to the spacing of the keys.
The keyboard is backlit with a nice white color that makes it easy to see. You have three levels of backlights, as well as an off-setting, all controlled via the F10 key.
Looking at the trackpad, you’ll see that it has a smooth finish on it. The mouse pointer tracks properly and feels natural to use. Multi-touch gestures are easy, but you may have a bit of a problem when it comes to two finger scrolling, which is normal.
The display we have in this Dell XPS9350-8008SLV is a 13.3” Sharp InfinityEdge panel with a max resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels. You shouldn’t have a problem viewing it from different angles – the viewing angles appear to be really sharp from all angles, thanks to the IPS panel, and we’re happy to tell you that there is no backlight bleed on the edges. Plus, you cannot overlook the tiny bezel. The maximum brightness, when measured, came to 420 nits.
The processor that is responsible for powering this laptop is an Intel Core i7-656OU processor with 8GB of LPDDR3 ram. Overall, this is one of the best processors you’ll get in an Ultrabook, without draining the battery life. The processor includes Intel Iris 540 graphics, which is good.
The SSD in the Dell XPS9350-8008SLV is PCI-e NVMe based. Basically, it’s a Samsung PM951 stick, which we’ve been noticing in many laptops lately. The speeds are nice, however, the write speed is lacking. However, we wouldn’t really call this a “slow” drive.
To measure the potential CPU and the graphics, we managed to find some benchmarks. Here’s what we found: PCMark 08: Accelerates-2917 with 90 C max temperature, Home Conventional -2470. 3DMark 11: 92072.
Also, here’s a look at some of the games running on this laptop – Tomb Raider (On high) fps 720p 50-55, fps 1080p 25-32. (On normal) fps 720p 60, fps1080p 34-40. (On low) fps 720 p 60, fps 1080p 52-58. For Starcraft 2 (On high), fps 720p 45-55, fps 1080p 34-48. (On medium) fps 720p 55-60, fps 1080p 52-60. (On low) fps 720p 130+ and fps 1080p 10-130.
While gaming, we noticed the temperatures reached 92 C with an average of 82 C. This laptop appears to do really good when it comes to low to medium gaming.
As far as connectivity goes, on the right side, you have one USB 3.0 port, a Noble lock, and a 3-in-1 card reader. On the left side, you have a Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C, a power connector, a headphone/mic combo and a USB 3.0. You also have a battery indicator button and lights.
The fan on this laptop of fairly quiet – no complaints here. It is only noticeable when you’re in a silent room and the air conditioner is off. Overall, the fan does a good job when it comes to removing the heat, but honestly, it needs to be a little more aggressive in order to eliminate those 90 C spikes we noticed.
Dell XPS9350-8008SLV Review: Verdict
If you are currently looking for a laptop that can handle light gaming, but you don’t want to add thickness or weight and it has a dedicated CPU, then this one right here may be a good choice for you.
