I’m probably not the first one to admit this, but there is some pretty good visual appeal when it comes to this laptop. The brush aluminum surfaces of this notebook are matte black plastic, which may be more prone to fingerprints, but this shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

The base appears to be resistant to twists and when you close it, it doesn’t make that horrible creaking sound like some laptops do. The center of the keyboard is a bit on the weak side as visible warping will show up as you push down on the surface, but again, this is how most laptops are built. Fortunately, none of the laptops weaknesses have an effect on the stability of the chassis.  The small hinges are good enough so that there’s no rocking as you’re typing.

Looking at the display, this laptop should be good for gaming with 17.3” diagonal 1920×1080 resolution support. On the top bezel, you’ll find a 720p webcam that can come in handy.

When it comes to the size and weight, it is much thicker than most of its competitors, which means it can be equipped with faster GPUs, so this shouldn’t be a downside. On another note, it is pretty light, weighing in at around 6 lbs.

The processor that powers the laptop is the Core i5-6300HQ.   The most interesting feature of the processor would be the quad-core setup, the 3.2 Ghz turbo boost, and the 2.3 Ghz clock speed. Looking at it, it is obviously one of the faster notebook units, as it has a 5800 CPU mark score. Not only would it be pretty good for gaming, it would also be useful for heavy-duty applications such as Illustrator or Photoshop.

The 8GB RAM is solid – if you want, you can get it up to 32 GB with a total of 2 sticks, which would make the laptop even better in terms of gaming and multitasking.

Graphics and Storage

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M is running the graphics show. Looking at the specs, it’s pretty beefy. In fact, it can easily be referred to as a real gaming card. Of course, being honest here, there are better units available, but this one is still good.

GTA 5 brings in 35FPS when used on Full HD resolution and high settings. If you want to make those frame rates smooth, you would need to drop the settings down a notch or two. The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 on similar settings gets 25FPS.

Looking at the storage section, there’s not a whole lot to be excited about, but do you ever get excited over storage? It has an old school 1TB SATA hard drive. Many have claimed that SSD would make the system faster, and while they are correct, it’s not that big of a deal. The good news here is that the laptop has a free SATA slot where you can install a solid-state drive.

Go ahead and plug in a nice gaming device or other useful devices – it has a wide array of ports available. You have two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.1 Type-C that you can use. It also has HDMI-out and mniDisplayPort that are included if you want to hook up an external monitor to the gaming laptop. For an Internet connection, you have a Gigabit Ethernet adapter with Intel’s AC Wifi card (Bluetooth 4.0 enabled).

This laptop has a 6-cell battery, which lasts up to 2 hours, which isn’t much. If you plan on playing a game or doing anything over an extended amount of time on the laptop, it would be best if you kept it plugged into the wall.

MSI GL72 6QD-001 Review: Verdict

MSI GL72 6QD isn’t that bad of a gaming machine – the price is certainly good for a beast like this. The graphics card is in the upper mid-range, which cut some costs. It can definitely run most of the latest games on high settings and resolution. The 17-inch screen is enough for a gamer, but if you want a bigger display, you can hook up an external monitor. If you’re short on money and you want a notebook or gaming, then this MSI would be a great option for you.
